I had spent 25 years searching for a missing grandfather
in my tree. I was told that his first 2 names
were possibly John William and that he was a sailor, sailing
from Bristol, Gloucestershire.
Thanks to you, I found him. You were certain that his
first 2 names were John William, so I abandoned my lists of other names. You also
said that he did not die in hospital in Bristol, as I had been told, that he was in
his early 40s, and that the hospital death story might have been put out by his
family to hide something he was involved in that was not acceptable in those days.
How right you were on these things. Following what you
told me, I sent for the death certificate of a John William
MacDonald, and to my surprise, he came back as a mercantile fireman aged 42. His death was at
a house in Bristol, not a hospital. The inquest into his death revealed he had been
living with a lady named Clara, possibly the person he left my grandmother for. So at
death he was involved in a situation that was not acceptable in those days.
I sent for his sailing record and sure enough, with his
sailing record was the photo of a good looking sailor, who looks so much like my
mother it was incredible. Without the material you gave me I would not have entertained
this person as my grandfather and certainly would not have sent for his sailing record.
